Live Services Weekly (Weather Permitting)

Due to the forecast of rain, the October 3rd service will be online only. View on our FB page.

Village Church of Oak Park has recently acquired the property at 911 S Taylor Street from the former Harrison Street Bible Church. It is conveniently located in the Arts District of Oak Park.

There is work to be done on and in the facility. But the Lord has blessed us with a large parking lot and green space that will allow us to gather for outdoor services each week, weather permitting (see below for an explanation of how we will address inclement weather).

Beginning Easter Sunday, here's what you can expect:

  • We have changed our service time to 10:30 am.
  • We will provide metal folding chairs for those attending and they will be socially spaced.
  • If you'd like to bring your own lawn chair for greater comfort, you are welcome to do so.
  • We have a large area of green space that we would like to reserve primarily for families with young children.
  • We will ask everyone to park on the street to allow seating in the parking lot.
  • We will have 3 or 4 spaces that will be available for viewing the service from your vehicle.
  • We will not require pre-registration, but we will ask for registration as you arrive for contact tracing purposes.
  • We ask that you wear masks as you arrive. Once seated, you may remove your mask.
  • We will also provide coffee and juice boxes for the kids to enjoy as we gather.
  • We will continue to livestream our services on Facebook Live. Although we know most of you are ready to reassemble, we recognize that others will not be able to. As a result, we will continue to provide access to our service online through this method.

The Bible calls us to "gather". We can think of no better time to finally come back together than on the Sunday that Jesus rose again.

We realize that that is highly unlikely that we will be able to have our weekly services outside without being impacted negatively by weather. The challenge involves not only the actual, physical gathering of the congregation, but also the preparation of the service itself. Our priority is to have in-person services if it is at all realistic. That means we want to wait as long as possible to get the most accurate reading of what can be expected from the weather. That also means that if we have to cancel on short notice, our “online” service will look differently that it has during our lockdown. In fact, it will most likely consist only of a message that is broadcast live in real time. This is the tradeoff of trying to go live rather than online. In waiting as long as possible to call a cancellation, we cannot accomplish all of the normal live elements of the service. Lord willing, we will only have a few instances of weather cancelling the service.

  • We will assess weather forecasts throughout the week, paying particular attention to rain probability.
  • We encourage each of you to keep a watchful eye on the forecast as well.
  • If we see that the likelihood of rain on Sunday morning is greater than 50%, we will post a cancellation notice by 6:00 pm on Saturday evening. Postings will be made on Facebook and on our website.
  • If we see that the likelihood is less than 50% by Saturday at 6:00 pm. We will plan on a live service. However, if unexpected rain arrives overnight, or if the likelihood of rain increases significantly, we will reassess and post a final determination by 8:00 am on Sunday morning. This update will also be made on Facebook and on the website.
  • We will also email everyone on our email list with updates based on the above criteria.
  • If there is any uncertainty about the service, feel free to email, text, or call an elder or staff member.

  • Begin work on roofing and HVAC as soon as possible.
  • Two of our men with experience in the trades are finalizing securing updated bids that allow us to compare “apples to apples”. These are complicated and extensive projects and require extra time for the contractor to propose and for us to evaluate.
  • We should see bids being awarded within the next 1-2 weeks and work to start ASAP from that point.
  • The interior will have new work and some remodeling done. This work will not be able to begin until the roofing and HVAC work has been completed.
  • We anticipate this entire scope of work will take 2-3 months.
  • This means we will continue with outdoor services until the work is completed.
  • Our services will remain at 10:30 until we return to indoor services.

We want to reiterate that the criteria for service cancellations are based on our strong bias to hold in-person services. We have gone far too long separated from one another and being able to enjoy the fellowship of our brothers and sisters. If services are cancelled, the message will be streamed live via Facebook and made available later on the website via a recorded copy.

We thank you for your continued patience and perseverance as we navigate these last few challenges to occupying our new home.
